Can‌ ‌Websites‌ ‌Be‌ ‌Art? | Jesse Smith

I attribute much of who I am to my mother. She raised me and my five siblings with a wonder and affinity for art, culture, and an embrace for the geeky things in life. My love for Star Wars and science fiction, Lord of the Rings and fantasy, and so many other things began with her, an original Trekkie (Star Trek fan) and Tolkien (J.R.R. Tolkien) fiend. I also began my artistic journey because of her. She studied art in college, and has creativity in every fiber of her being. I started drawing at a young age due to the exposure to art that was a normal aspect of living with my mother. But I can thank my father for the analytical and scientific mind that has come in handy now that I am in coding. As a chemist who has worked on many pharmaceutical drugs, he would often come home spouting information about metabolites and molecular structure. It now dawns on me that though different, my father and I speak similar languages: ones that everyone on the outside of our respective fields find disinteresting the moment we speak a word of it.

Though many find it boring or difficult, I find coding and web development to be invigorating and infinitely interesting. As an artist, designer, digital solutionist, problem solver, etc., I aim to bring as many tools as I can to the table to aid 1909 Digital in our quest to change the current marketing landscape. But as a philomath, I’m never done learning new things. I plan to continue to fill my proverbial toolbox with as much as I am able. In the meantime, I will continue to make art. Or websites. I’ll let you be the judge.
