Vibe coding has gone too far and organizations are paying the price
The Problem With Vibe Coding
For a brief moment, vibe coding was viewed as a legitimate productivity enhancer, a beacon of light in a world bound up in the intricacies of code. The idea was simple: let AI generate software from natural language prompts, skip the annoying hard parts of programming, and build applications faster than ever before. It sounded like a revolution in software development.
The reality? Vibe coding is overrated and inefficient, with few actual real-world applications beyond: do this thing quickly, results be damned.
By far the biggest problem with vibe coding is that it too often creates more work than it saves. Yes, AI can generate functional code in seconds, that code still needs to be understood, tested, debugged, and maintained, all while fitting into a complex web of strings and loops and countless other bedrocks of programming languages. When something inevitably breaks (and it will break, it always does, this is one of the laws of programming) the time spent unraveling AI-generated logic outweighs whatever efficiency was gained in the first place.
Software Development Is More Than Code
Vibe coding treats software development like a mere vessel for producing lines of code. That’s not software development! Software development is about understanding the architecture underneath the lines of code. Even with AI assistance, developers still need a solid grasp of programming concepts, frameworks, and system design to know whether the generated solution is actually correct. Without that knowledge, it’s easy to assemble a fragile collection of code that appears to work but quickly becomes difficult to maintain.
Ironically, many of the problems vibe coding claimed to solve already had better solutions. Long before generative AI, developers had mature tools for wireframing, prototyping, and rapidly building applications. Those tools required fewer computing resources, produced more predictable results, and fit naturally into established development workflows.
Instead, organizations now find themselves stitching together AI-generated snippets into overly complicated systems. Rather than simplifying development, the process can resemble a digital Rube Goldberg machine, a tangled, incoherent collection of interconnected pieces that becomes increasingly difficult to modify or troubleshoot.
Where’d The Vibes Go?
It’s telling that the phrase “vibe coding” has largely disappeared from industry conversations. As teams gained firsthand experience with the approach, the buzzword lost much of its appeal. Many discovered that AI is a useful assistant for experienced developers, but not a replacement for software engineering expertise. The negative reputation attached to the term reflects the gap between its promises and its real-world performance.
AI undeniably has a place in software development. Used thoughtfully, it can accelerate routine tasks, generate boilerplate code, and help experienced engineers work more efficiently. But treating AI as a substitute for technical knowledge has proven to be an expensive lesson for many organizations.
Technology trends come and go, and AI and vibe coding are no different. But the fundamentals of good software engineering remain consistent. Building reliable systems still requires thoughtful design, technical expertise, careful maintenance, and a commitment to fundamentals.
No amount of hype can replace those fundamentals, and attempts to do so often end exactly where many predicted they would: with expensive failures and hard-earned lessons.
